Ship departure

DImensions: 17 x 21,5 cm Location: Steamboat Agios Nikolaos, OTE Material: telegraphic paper

Radio telegram, written in English, in which the captain of the ship Agios Nikolaos informs ship owner K. Skinitis in Piraeus of the date of the ship's departure from Curacao. The Greeks during the 19th and 20th century were almost exclusively involved in shipping cargo ships, which where shipping in bulk on behalf of third countries. The use of flags of convenience in combination with the market of excessively cheap cargo ships that were built in the USA during World War II (liberties) boosted the Greek-owned shipping in the 1950s. During the 1950s and at the beginning of 1960, Greeks were the main transporters of cheap, in bulk cargo in Europe and the USA.
