Konstantinos Mitsotakis
Telegram of compassion from the Chania MP Konstantinos Mitsotakis to the protestors of the Athens Federation of Grocers. Since as early as the mid-1950s, the Federation of Grocers of Greece had proceeded with demonstrations for the problems faced by the sector, the major problem being overprofessionalisation, namely the lack of protective measures for the opening of new shops. The Federation declared a PanHellenic strike on 21 August 1959 which was suspended after a meeting of the grocers' representatives with prime minister Konstatinos Karamanlis and him assuring them that their demands would be met. Their demands were that a) violations of time limits be heard by the Magistracy, b) the half-holiday of Wednesday be expanded to all the shops across the country, c ) the timetable of mixed shops be strictly implemented, d )the grocers be included in the Grocer Employees Supplementary Insurance Fund, e) a School for Shop owners and food selling Employees be established by law. At the time when Konstantinos Mitsotakis showed support for the grocer's protests, he was an MP with the Liberals Party.
