L. M. Ericsson telephone wall set

DImensions: 35 x 27 x 15 cm Location: Sweden Material: wood,metal,bronze

Wooden wall-mounted magneto phone featuring two bronze ringers on its upper side. On the right, there is a black hand crank used to make calls. On the left, the bronze ear piece (with a black plastic handle) , which is connected to the device with a black cord, is mounted on a metal hook. This device was Ericsson's proposal with a view to reducing the phone size and generalising the use of telephony. It is remarkable that different versions of this model were manufactured on behalf of the Ericsson company, not only in factories in Sweden but also in Great Britain, Finland, Italy etc. It is worth noting that the transformation of big telephones in wooden casing (see also ΜΤ-015081) into the wooden "pulpit phone" created the conditions for Ericsson to take a great leap towards mass production; namely the company's objective since the 1910s. Given the fact that the use of metal required higher working cost and time, such wooden constructions found immediate application. This phase went on until the late 1920s and early 1930s when Bakelite became the main construction material.
