Blasting of railway lines

DImensions: 16,5 x 20 cm Location: Greece, Edessa, TTT Material: telegraphic paper

Telegram with which SEK maintenance is informed of the bridge explosion at the 121st kilometer of the railway line for Arnissa, from where the two iron rails landed in the river waters. The telegraph should be incorporated in the context of the civil war which started officially on the 30th of March 1946. One of the main purposes of the Democratic Army at the start of 1947, during which the war activity climaxed, was the stable command of the Kozani plateau up to Axio river with utmost importance being towards the Edessa-Arnissa-Kastania passages, with the objective being to cut off Western Macedonia from the south and the east. For the Democratic Army, the only way to minimise the gap between its own meager ability to restore provisions to those of his opponent, was to try and neutralise or limit transport infrastructure that allowed the seamless distribution of assistance. It tried, therefore, to create damages to the rail network and to the road network. The method chosen was by mines. The company "Hellenic State Railways" (SEK) was founded in 1920 with the purpose of reconstructing and unifying sections of the network. The company operated until 1970 when it was succeeded by the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE).
