Asia Minor catastrophe

DImensions: 20 x 23,5 cm Location: Greece, Heraklion Material: telegraphic paper

7 page telegram. The prefect of Heraklion, Micahel Sgouros, announces a press release which declares the intention of the new Triantafyllakos government (28/8/1922-16/9/1922), namely the scaling-down of military involvement (discharge of military classes 1912-18, discharge of reserve officers), the imposition of stringent economic measures, although not of new taxes as the Greek people is over-burdened. The press release concludes with the assessment that the financial situation in Greece is terrible, but not desperate. The government of Nikolaos Triantafyllakos took over on August 28, 1922 and remained in power until September 16, 1922. It replaced the Petros Papadakis-led government which fell due to the collapse of the Asia Minor front. During his governance, the Asia Minor catastrophe took place (catastrophe of Smyrna) and led to the 11 September 1922 Revolution headed by N. Plastiras, St. Gonatas and D. Fokas. The revolution demanded the resignation of the government and the abdication of King Constantine I.
