A device amplifying the analogue signal and converting it into digital. In a grey metal box fitted with parts and devices where 30 analogue telephone lines are encoded in a digital signal platform. In 1956, in the USA, the National Invertors Hall of Fame honoured Bernard M.Oliver, Claude Shannon and John R.Priece for the invention of PCM, described today as Pulse Code Modulation. All three of them had already published in 1948 an article entitled "The Philosophy of PCM".
