In international terminology, it is called a telegraph sounder and it is an electromagnet that connects to the telegraphy network via a telegraph switchboard. The metal part that extends between the two round coils, every time the circuit opens and closes, hits the metal anvil thus creating the sounds of the MORSE code. Initially it was used to amplify the signal of both the transmitter and the receiver. Very soon, however, the operators began to connect the amplifier only to the receiver, in order to increase the precision of the incoming MORSE signals.
